It has been a couple of rough weeks for Cali Hip Hop. First the death of Chali 2na's father than a few days later I learned the passing of DJ Joe Cooley's father and Egyptian Lover's father 2 weeks before. Then the tragic death of DJ Matthew Africa last Monday. Death seems to be closer us than normal lately.

Although I never posted any of Matthew Africa's mixes before since many of his mixes ,I felt, weren't as good mixing wise as similar mixes by Mane One or DJ Day. However unlike other deejays Matthew Africa was not afraid to dig for music and wasn't content to playing the same old radio hits of 80's and 90's like so many of the "deejays" (human jukeboxes) out there today. In tribute here's a  live mix by Matthew for all those who now will never hear a Matthew Africa set.

"A couple of people asked me to record my set and I brought a recorder but, like a dumb-ass, I forgot the line-in cord from the mixer so I ended up with a recording of muffled tunes augmented by record nerd conversation. Fortunately I kept the records I played in order so later when I went home I was able to record myself playing the records how I played them at the party. It's all the way live and part of the way sloppy"
